Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about a private spa chalet holiday at the Büchelbergerei in Bavaria, Germany.

The Chalets

A chaletdorf is a village of individual chalets — each one a standalone holiday house, not a hotel room or apartment within a larger building. At the Büchelbergerei, ten chalets are arranged around a small central square, each with its own private garden, private hot tub (Whirlpool) and private sauna. You have a neighbour, but you share nothing with them unless you choose to.

Yes — without exception. Every chalet at the Büchelbergerei has its own outdoor hot tub (Whirlpool) on the terrace. It belongs to your chalet for the duration of your stay. No booking, no time slot, no other guests. You use it whenever you like.

Yes. Every chalet has a private sauna — either built into the chalet (Klein & Fein) or as a separate sauna cube in the garden (Frank & Frei). The sauna is not shared with other guests.

The saltwater pool is shared between all chaletdorf guests — but not with the public. It is heated to 30°C, contains no chlorine (saltwater filtration only), and is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There are no opening times. You can swim at 6am or midnight — it makes no difference.

Klein & Fein: 2 guests · Frank & Frei: Frank & Frei: 2–4 guests · Die Villa: up to 8 guests · Combined chalets: up to 10 guests. Each chalet has its own bedrooms, bathrooms and private outdoor areas.

The Büchelbergerei has a reception and a pool lounge — but it operates like a village, not a hotel. There is no hotel lobby, no shared dining room, no buffet. The reception is available to welcome you and handle any requests. Everything else is private to your chalet.

Every stay includes: daily breakfast basket delivered to your chalet door, use of the private hot tub (Whirlpool) and sauna, access to the saltwater pool, high-speed Wi-Fi, tablet with guest information system, and parking. Massages, meals from the chaletdorf kitchen and the Michelin-starred chef's dinner are available separately.

Getting There — From the UK, Netherlands, Belgium & Scandinavia

Via the Channel Tunnel (Eurotunnel) or ferry, the drive from London to the Büchelbergerei is approximately 9–10 hours, depending on your crossing. Many guests from the UK break the journey overnight in Belgium, the Netherlands or northern Germany and arrive the following day. The final stretch — along the A6 motorway between Frankfurt and Nuremberg — is one of Germany's least congested routes.

From Amsterdam or Rotterdam: approximately 6 hours via the A3 and A6. From Brussels: approximately 6 hours via the A3 and A6. No toll roads are required after you leave Belgium. The route is straightforward — essentially one motorway corridor south to Bavaria.

Nuremberg Airport (IATA: NUE) is 45 minutes away. It has direct connections from many European cities including London (Heathrow and City), Amsterdam, Brussels, Copenhagen, Vienna and Zürich. From Nuremberg airport, you can hire a car or take the train to Gunzenhausen (approximately 50 minutes, one change at Ansbach).

Yes — the A6 motorway between Heilbronn and Nuremberg passes close to Gunzenhausen (exit Ansbach, then 20 km on the B13). The A6 is considered one of the most uncongested major motorways in Germany. No Alpine passes, no seasonal tunnel queues, no border delays.

Yes — free on-site parking, with CCTV. Two electric vehicle charging points are available (22 kW each). If you are travelling with a caravan or motorhome, please contact us in advance to discuss space.

Yes. The nearest train station is Gunzenhausen, served by regional trains from Nuremberg (approximately 50 minutes, one change at Ansbach). From Gunzenhausen station to the chaletdorf is approximately 5 minutes by taxi. We recommend pre-arranging a taxi — the local taxi firm's number is provided in your guest information.

Approximately 3 hours via the A3 and A6 — no Alpine passes required on this route. From Basel: approximately 2.5 hours. The Büchelbergerei is a popular destination for Swiss guests, partly because the driving time is shorter than many Austrian destinations.

No — and that is intentional. The Büchelbergerei is not a hotel with a restaurant. Instead, your chalet has a fully-equipped luxury kitchen for preparing your own meals. The chaletdorf kitchen provides ready-to-finish dishes — prepared by the kitchen team, finished by you — as well as grill packages for the outdoor Weber grill. Raclette and fondue sets are available to order. Wines from the Michelin-starred Winzerhof Stahl winery are stocked in your chalet on arrival.

Food & Drink

Yes. A fresh breakfast basket is delivered to your chalet door every morning. It contains regional cheese, bread from a local bakery, homemade preserves, fresh seasonal fruit, muesli, honey from the chaletdorf's own wildflower meadows, and freshly prepared smoothies and shots. There is no dining room. You eat in your chalet, on your terrace, or wherever you like. A vegan version is available — please mention this when booking.

Yes — several. The Gasthof Eichelgarten is a few minutes' walk from the chaletdorf, serving traditional Franconian cuisine. The Gasthof Gentner in Spielberg is a 10-minute drive and sits beside a small castle with views over the lake district. The town of Gunzenhausen (5 minutes) has a good range of restaurants and cafés. Ansbach and Nuremberg are both within easy reach for evenings out.

Yes — every chalet has a fully automatic bean-to-cup coffee machine. All chalets also have a steam oven, dishwasher, large fridge-freezer and all necessary kitchen equipment for self-catering.

Wellness — Hot Tub, Sauna, Pool & More

Yes — without restriction. The hot tub (Whirlpool) on your terrace belongs to your chalet and is available 24 hours a day for the duration of your stay. There are no operating hours.

The standard temperature is approximately 38–40°C. You can adjust the temperature via the controls on the tub. The tub is ready heated on your arrival.

The pool is heated to 30°C year-round and uses saltwater filtration — no chlorine. It is located in the central area of the chaletdorf, accessible from all chalet gardens. Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The water is notably soft compared to chlorinated pools, and the temperature makes it comfortable even in winter.

Yes — a range of massages and wellness rituals can be booked during your stay. These take place at the pool lounge. Please enquire in advance so we can arrange availability.

Ice bathing involves briefly immersing yourself in cold water — typically between 4°C and 10°C. It has a strong physiological effect: improved circulation, endorphin release and a notable sense of calm afterwards. The Büchelbergerei offers guided ice bathing sessions year-round with a certified ICE coach (Christina). Sessions are led safely and are suitable for first-timers. It is one of the few places in Bavaria where this is offered in a structured, year-round format. Please book in advance.

Yes — provided you prefer private wellness to shared spa facilities. There is no spa centre, no treatment rooms with waiting areas, no hotel wellness floor. What the chaletdorf offers instead is completely private: your own hot tub, your own sauna, a quiet pool with no scheduled swimming sessions. If you are looking for a shared spa with a wide menu of group treatments, the Büchelbergerei is not that. If you want privacy, quiet and warmth, it is exactly right.

DOGS

Yes — dogs are genuine guests, not a reluctant concession. Almut and Axel Böker, who run the chaletdorf, are dog owners themselves. Dogs are welcome in selected chalets (Frank & Frei and Klein & Fein). Every dog-friendly chalet has an enclosed private garden. Please mention your dog when enquiring — the number of dogs in the chaletdorf at any one time is kept limited.

A small additional fee applies for dogs. Details are provided at the time of booking. There is no per-night charge structure — the fee is a flat supplement for the stay.

Yes — both the Altmühlsee and the Brombachsee have designated dog-friendly lake shores where dogs can enter the water freely. These are 10–15 minutes from the chaletdorf. Field paths and nature trails begin directly from the chaletdorf — no car needed for a morning walk.

Dogs are not permitted in the saltwater pool. However, the Frank & Frei chalets have a ground-floor bathroom with a direct outdoor access door — ideal for rinsing muddy paws without walking through the chalet.

The Region — Lakes, Towns & Day Trips

45 minutes by car. Rothenburg ob der Tauber is one of Europe's best-preserved medieval walled towns — the complete circuit of city walls is intact and walkable. The town is busiest during the day; arriving in the late afternoon or early evening, when the day visitors have left, gives a completely different experience. It is easily done as a day trip from the chaletdorf.

45 minutes by car. Nuremberg has one of Germany's finest historic old towns, a 14th-century imperial castle, the Germanic National Museum (the largest museum of German cultural history), excellent restaurants and a famous Christmas market in December. A full day is recommended.

Dinkelsbühl is a smaller and quieter medieval town 35 minutes from the chaletdorf. Like Rothenburg, its old town walls and gates are largely intact — but it receives far fewer visitors. For anyone who finds Rothenburg too crowded, Dinkelsbühl is often the more rewarding experience. Half a day is sufficient.

Yes — and freely. The Franconian Lake District has seven lakes, all publicly accessible with no admission charge and no private shoreline. The Altmühlsee and Brombachsee are the largest; the water quality meets drinking water standards. Swimming is possible from May to September; outside those months, the lake shores are excellent for walking and cycling.

Cycling is particularly good — flat lake-side paths connect the major lakes, and the Altmühltal cycle route follows the Altmühl river valley through a protected landscape. Walking, stand-up paddleboarding and sailing are available on the Brombachsee. Several golf courses are within 30 minutes. In winter: ice bathing and snowshoeing when conditions allow.

Franconia is one of Germany's driest regions — it receives significantly less rainfall than Bavaria's Alpine foothills. Summers are warm and often sunny; winters are cold but rarely extreme. The chaletdorf is open year-round and functions well in every season. In autumn and winter, the lakes are quiet and the countryside takes on a different, often more beautiful character.

Booking, Cancellation & Practical Details

The minimum stay is generally 3 nights. Shorter stays may occasionally be available as last-minute bookings — check the 'last-minute availability' section of the website or call us directly. For peak periods (summer, Christmas, Easter) a minimum of 4–7 nights often applies.

Bookings can be made directly on the website via the online booking system, by email to info@buechelbergerei.de, or by telephone on +49 9831 8831030. Direct booking is recommended — it avoids platform fees and allows us to discuss your specific requirements before confirming.

Free cancellation is possible up to 90 days before arrival. Between 90 and 60 days: 10% of the booking value. Between 60 and 10 days: 30%. Within 10 days: 80%. We recommend travel insurance for stays booked far in advance. In exceptional circumstances we always seek a fair and flexible solution — please call us directly.

Yes — the chaletdorf is open throughout the Christmas and New Year period. This is a popular time; we recommend booking early (6–12 months in advance for peak dates). Raclette and fondue are a popular choice for Christmas Eve gatherings. The town of Nuremberg holds Germany's most famous Christmas market, 45 minutes away.

There is no minimum age. Children are welcome — the enclosed private gardens are safe, and the Frank & Frei chalets have cots available on request for children up to 3 years. Older children and teenagers tend to enjoy the lakes and outdoor activities particularly. If you have very young children, please mention this when booking so we can arrange the appropriate cot and any safety equipment.

Yes — gift vouchers for a stay at the Büchelbergerei are available directly from the website. They can be personalised and are valid for 3 years from purchase. A chalet stay as a gift — for a birthday, anniversary, wedding or Christmas — is one of the most popular requests we receive.

How the Büchelbergerei Compares

The experience is comparable in terms of chalet-style accommodation, private wellness and scenery. The practical differences: no Alpine pass to negotiate, no Brenner motorway congestion, significantly shorter drive from western and northern Europe, and noticeably fewer tourists. The Franconian Lake District has no mountains — instead it has flat lake landscapes, open skies and access to Franconia's historic towns. If mountain scenery is essential to your holiday, this is not the right destination. If you want private wellness, quiet lakes and a culturally rich region within easy driving distance of northern Europe, the Büchelbergerei is a strong alternative.

Neither, exactly. The Büchelbergerei is a chaletdorf — a privately run village of holiday chalets. It has the personal service of a small hotel (someone to welcome you, daily breakfast delivered, staff to assist with any request) but the privacy and freedom of a self-catering holiday rental. You have your own front door, your own garden and your own schedule. There is no check-out time for breakfast and no reception desk you need to pass through each morning.

Yes — it is one of the most common occasions for a stay. The Klein & Fein chalets are particularly suited: 70 square metres for two people, a private hot tub on the terrace and a private sauna. For a more significant celebration, the Michelin-starred chef's dinner adds a genuinely memorable element. We are happy to arrange small personal touches for special occasions — please mention this when booking.
